Crisis

Kenya is currently grappling with the aftereffects of four failed rainy seasons followed by severe El Niño-induced floods. The country recently emerged from the worst drought in four decades, which, combined with flooding, displaced thousands, destroyed livelihoods, and caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

These extreme climate events have worsened food insecurity and increased the risk of disease outbreaks like cholera. Nearly 12% of the population is food insecure, and over 800,000 children face acute malnutrition.
Despite the scale of the crisis, international support has fallen short—only 20% of pledged funding has been delivered for drought and flood relief. Meanwhile, Kenya continues to host refugees from neighboring countries, adding pressure on already stretched services and humanitarian aid.

The effects of poverty, limited access to clean water, and the lingering impacts of COVID-19 continue to challenge vulnerable populations, particularly women, children, and displaced people who face heightened risks of abuse and exploitation.
